Swimming In Cow Country https://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=2035 Thu, 22 Mar 2018 19:19:22 +0000 http://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=2035

In the middle of cow country Utah, lives a cluster of natural hot springs. These crystal clear blue ponds reach down to 33 feet deep. They are 100 degrees and absolutely beautiful. It took us about 2 hours to drive down from Provo, Utah to this beautiful location. We took snacks, the dogs and our gear to spend a couple hours in the water. We spent way longer than we thought and ended up with very muddy dogs, but we were so happy and we stayed warm amongst the snow covered fields. Hope you enjoy this weeks video!

Mindful Mornings https://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1947 Fri, 02 Mar 2018 17:58:41 +0000 http://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1947

My mornings are my favorite time of the day. I don’t care if it’s a Monday or a Friday, I love waking up with the sunrise with a clear, rested mind ready to take on the day. These are my tips and tricks to be able to wake up and feel amazing throughout the day:

  1. Wake up with the sunrise. It helps your body in so many ways both physical and spiritual. Your pineal gland also known as your third eye right in between your eyebrows is able to see the sunlight and starts the production of Serotonin (you’re happy hormone).
  2. Take long deep breaths. In for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds. Oxygen is the key to health. This will also help your Serotonin (and everything else) energize and feed so they can do their jobs.
  3. Kneel in prayer or take time to think about what you’re grateful for. When you are grateful and humble the universe or God opens up everything to you.
  4. Read your scriptures or inspirational quotes to get your subconscious on a good thoughts. Your subconscious is most active 20 minutes after you wake up. Fill it with memorable quotes and positivity.
  5. Turn on spa or relaxation music while you get out of bed and start moving. Something that is quiet and flows with the natural waking up process. The vibrations of music are naturally healing.
  6. Prepare the night ahead the things that are routinely apart of your day: clothes, breakfast, etc. I also put out my green tea, my honey, collagen and vitamins. This helps things go faster.
  7. Take the time to stretch and meditate. I usually sleep on my side and screw up my shoulders from crunching them. I use yoga blocks and rollers to keep my shoulders stretched and aligned. I also take time after to refocus my energy and focus it on my injuries so that I may heal faster.
  8. Take time for caring for your skin. Drink lemon water or APV water within minutes of waking up. This hydrates and cleans you out from being stagnate all night. It also sets the bar for you to meet your water intake goal everyday. Use a facemask, gentle and natural cleansers to wake your skin up in the morning. I also love a steam facial if I have time.
  9. EXERCISE! Use your mornings if you have the time to get a HIIT workout in. The benefits of HIIT are long listed and you’ll jump start your metabolism.
  10. Say positive things about yourself, to yourself. Remind yourself of your goals, your riches and your needs. Say these things to yourself everyday: I am grateful. I am loved. I am successful. I am a part of the Creator.

Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoy and I hope that you can take tips from this and apply it to your life so you’re able to take control of your life and your status.

The Year 2018 https://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1690 Tue, 09 Jan 2018 16:15:17 +0000 http://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1690 Well, we did it guys! We lived another year, we loved 2017, we hated 2017 but either way, we lived through it and we are better because of it. I loved being able to spend time with my family (minus 1) this year in California. Through long lines at Disneyland, to getting stung by stingrays while surfing, we laughed and were together for a much needed vacation. I loved being able to put into perspective what really matters for the new year. My family is everything to me and to end ’17 and start ’18 with them is something I plan to do for the rest of my life. I hope that this year you have taken the time to sit down and think about what you want, how to get it and how you’re going to eliminate the distractions so that its nothing but a clear path to your goals.

This year as a resolution, I was tired of seeing everyone setting the same goals: new body, new me, new career, new this and that. I wanted something to actually benefit others and feel like I really was becoming better. My family and I were waiting in line for our favorite restaurant to open, I was holding my nieces and giggling about how we just met Kylo Ren. As I turned around I noticed a homeless man, contorted on the ground hiding under dirty clothes with nothing but a plastic bag next to him. I froze and immediately grabbed the little cash that I had, I bent down and softly woke him up. He looked up at me, teeth missing, beard long and gray with a dirty face. I held out the money, which he grabbed with one hand. I was getting up immediately but he grabbed my hands in both of his and held them as he spoke to me in a language I did not understand. Immediately the tears hit and I was making a scene in front of the ever growing line. I asserted him with a nod, he let go and put his head back down. I was still a mess and began to give my family a hug thanking them for being there and thanking the Lord that I was so blessed. I realized at that moment that we are so entirely caught up in thinking of ourselves ALL THE DAMN TIME. We are no better than each other, in fact we are equal and we are powerful. My resolution was to volunteer, to donate, to some how everyday make someone better. I want to help those who are not as fortunate, who need an extra boost in helping themselves. In that moment I reached down and as the man looked up at me, I immediately thought of the Savior and his love. He hung out with everyone. Lawyers, criminals, prophets, kings, the homeless. Never once did He think he was better. In that moment, I knew thats what He wanted me to do this year and just as importantly it’s what I want to do.

I hope so far the new year has been good, of course I’ve already broken some of my less important resolutions and it’s totally okay. Just gives me more time to try. This year is going to be a fun one and I’m excited to share the journey. Here are some family photos taken on Newport Beach in 40 degree fog. Happy New Year!

A Day In Asheville https://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1598 Tue, 19 Dec 2017 13:00:01 +0000 http://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1598

Asheville is one of those cities that you mention and you’ll hear: “Oh my gosh, I LOVE Asheville!” Nearly every time I tell people about this amazing city, their response is such a positive reinforcement that this city is one of the coolest, low-key cities. I will admit that I have only been to Asheville a handful of times but each time is even more new and adventurous than the last time. Full of amazing, organic restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and dog-loving people (a HUGE plus), Asheville is a city for people who love life and love adventure.

Our adventure began early morning on Monday. We drove up for Thanksgiving week. The air was so cold and the frost was just beginning to melt as we ventured downtown and hit the town. Sofia never used to get cold but she has been living in Florida for so long, that as soon as she was outside walking the streets, the poor girl was shivering. Coming from Utah, I thought she’d find the change invigorating but turns out we needed to go buy her a sweater. We bought her a dog sweater and went to grab breakfast at one of our favorite places: Over Easy Cafe.

Over Easy cafe is everything! It is local, organic and it has vegan/vegetarian options as well. We discovered this cute little place last time we were in NC and fell in love. Their trout omelette is to die for. They have kombucha on draft and it was phenomenal. We both got an omelet, mine was veggie and his was flank stank. We both split a veggie bowl with their house made hot sauce. Which is so good but also incredibly spicy. Everything is locally sourced, quality food and you feel good eating it. They have fresh single origin coffee, though I am not a coffee drinker. The atmosphere is super cool and everyone is in close quarters with each other. It’s definitely the place to go for a great breakfast or brunch.
After breakfast we ran around to all sorts of stores, book stores, music stores, clothing boutiques and it was like being in a calmer New York. The back alleys that are brick lined and rise up to all sorts of loft apartments sitting on top of local bodega’s and shops. There are so many hidden gems, you just have to be on close watch to find them. Also Yelp, is extremely helpful for finding places to hang out. Just like any city though, its so much cooler to avoid the tourist places and go where the locals go to do what the locals do.

Of course, we were that couple walking around with my camera around my neck and my phone in my hand to get the best shots. We just so happen to stop traffic to get some cool shots but hey it was worth it. This is one of my favorite streets as its all brick and cobblestone. You can tell that fall had already taken its toll and the trees were on their way to a deep sleep. It was sunny and beautiful but still a cold sixty degrees.

After spending the day, eating through Asheville. I had a belly but we still wanted to try the best foods and explore more. Sofia was getting fed organic veggies and meats while we were running into one restaurant and back out to another. Our sunset stop was at Wicked Weed which happens to be Grayson’s family friends. We enjoyed hor d’oeuvres, next to a big outdoor fire, making friends with others who also had dogs in sweaters. I loved that Asheville is a dog city and there are a lot there. Of course, every couple steps I am bending down to pet another cute dog and introduce mine. It was getting so cold though and I didn’t have gloves or a hat. After hanging near the fire long enough to run into a outdoor camping store, we bought gloves and a hat and still continued to run the streets.  At about 11pm, we were tired, cold, and full but so happy. We had been to so many restaurants, bakeries, books stores and needed to drive an hour and a half up the mountain to get back to Grayson’s place. We wanted something sweet and something to finish the night off and give us a sugar boost to make the drive so late. We walked into French Broad Chocolate Lounge and oh my gosh this place is a must! When you walk in, it smells like Main Street in Disneyland. You know that overwhelming warm smell of waffle and brown sugar? Their selection is incredible and they hand make their ice cream. We died and went to heaven, but then had to come back and drive up so we could sleep and digest the 4,000 calories we consumed that day.

Overall, WE LOVE ASHEVILLE! It is such a cool place and we didn’t even explore half the city, but everything we did see and do was so much fun and it was nice to escape and get lost. Everyone always talks about living in the moment and we lived in the moment the entire time we were in NC. Something about the air was fresh and intoxicating, it was a sense of freedom and no worries to be had. It was an escape to a artsy, cobble-stoned world, one that held so many cool passions and even better people.

Swim Week: Being the Face of Brands https://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1015 Wed, 26 Jul 2017 16:00:52 +0000 http://www.janessasjournal.com/?p=1015 This last week was Swim Week. That means all of the models from LA, New York and Miami come into town to walk for the highest known swim brands around the world. You may recognize names like Beach Bunny, Ocean Drive, Luli Fama, Minimale Animale just to name a few.

While everything about swim week seems absolutely glamorous, beautiful girls with “perfect” bodies and amazing, next-level swim wear, it actually is a lot of hard work. Swim Week prep starts months in advance to get our bodies in shape, to figure out what heels to cast in, the perfect suit that isn’t too much yet sets you apart from all the other girls. Then, as it comes closer and closer to Mid-July, once a day to the gym becomes twice a day, carbs and sugar go out the window to be forgotten about until the festivities are over and everything pulls together in hopes that we will book a lot and rock the runways.

This last week consisted of running around in 100% humidity and around 90 degrees starting as early as 10 in the morning and going from casting to casting. These castings are usually 2-3 hours of waiting around in a very hot and crowded room with girls in bikinis. We then proceed to be taken in usually by 10-20 and we walk in front of clients who either shoo us away or tell us to stay for secondary pictures. Not even the pictures guarantee your spot in the show. The truth about these clients is that they have already chosen their girls, then they come out with a “1st Option” or “priority” list where they usually will choose girls who have over 100,000 followers on Instagram. This leaves about 1-4 spots open for other models, sometimes it’s even to just grab a few backups just in case something happens. This goes on all day, everyday until the shows begin on Thursday.

Yes, it’s glam, Yes, its desirable but being in it full time it gets exhausting and draining really quick. This year I got my body to what I wanted it to be, got everything ready and was so excited to get my butt back down to South Beach, my old home. I believe that when you are happy with yourself, you don’t deal with negativity, you don’t care what happens whether you book a certain show or not. I was just happy and proud to be surrounded by so many pretty girls who have worked hard and have a motive and a purpose. Unfortunately, a lot of the girls have the attitude of: “Well she is prettier than me, skinnier than me, taller than me, no wonder I am not booking any shows.” I HATED hearing this. It made me want to cry and give those girls a long hug. The thing about this industry is, it is easy to compare yourself. It’s so easy to wonder why you’re not getting the type of jobs you want, why you didn’t get the part, etc. You have to be SO strong and KNOW you’re stunning. These girls need to know that they made it this far, they have the term “Model” to their names and in no way should they ever compare themselves to others. It applies into anything and anybody, once you start comparing, you’ve already turned around on your path of progress and started sprinting back.

Back to how the week went down, I was feeling great! I booked a couple shows, had the Swim Show over the weekend with one of my favorite brands who I had done their campaign for. I was on top of the world until my Kidney Stones hit. Everyone has their struggles, unfortunately mine has always been my kidneys. Which you know what? I am proud of because it has humbled me and made me who I am this day. I wasn’t keen on the fact that it was the day of my show and a few days before Swim Show. Hey, life happens, it came unexpectedly and there was nothing I could do. Long story short, I had to cancel on all my jobs and shows. I had to explain to everyone why I wasn’t at any of the events, it was extremely hard to watch the days pass by and not be able to go out and see my friends and favorite DJ’s and work. Now as I reflect back on it, my friends and agent were so supportive. I was able to see my face blown up on several large prints because my friends took pictures for me while I was in bed in pain. They sent me “get well soon” and “i love you” texts daily to make sure that I would stay positive. I sat back and even though I had to cancel on everything, I am so proud of myself for not only booking one swim campaign but two!! One for Everyday Sunday and one for Manhattan Swimwear. I am the face for these companies! Regardless of everything, I did have a good swim week and I am excited to welcome Swim Week 2018! I am grateful for who I am and who I have become. I am grateful for everything that has come my way, challenges and opportunities that make me a working model       xx Stay tuned for recap of the week on Friday.
